JOHN 

John is a memoir of my oldest brother John, who disappeared from Vancouver in May of 1969, never to be heard from again. I sourced from an archive of family letters dating from 1959 – 2010, which document the years leading up to his disappearance, his medical history, and the subsequent tracking my parents did of his disappearance. He was twenty-three at the time and I was thirteen.

La Goddam Voie Lactée

La Goddam Voie Lactée’s reaction to the harshness and asperity of the world is to offer up a pagan mass. A celebration in the form of a challenge. Drawing inspiration from the constant mourning that marks our current age, Mélanie Demers dives into a reflection on the theme of incompleteness. Each one is camped out at their own lookout post; sometimes they jump into the arena and grab hold of gestures, words, music, to drape around themselves like a costume. They sketch out their universe, drawing and erasing it. An aesthetic little Big Bang, La Goddam Voie Lactée is an exercise in self-imagination, a means of finding our bearings in this imperfect and infinite world which is our common belonging and inheritance.

Bboyizm - In My Body

It's said that the bravest thing a dancer can do is grow old – for a b-boy/b-girl, the experience is approaching heroic. In keeping with hip-hop culture, b-boys/b-girls present a façade of confidence and invincibility as they engage in battles to prove their value and establish their dominance. The resulting vocabulary is one of the most physically demanding and visually impressive of the dance genres and leaves no room for the expression of vulnerability.

For In My Body, dancer / choreographer Crazy Smooth brings together an intergenerational group of dancers and an international creative team for an intensely athletic investigation of the evolution of self and the effects of aging on street dancers. 

The BWDC is more than proud to be a co-producer of this new work.

Graveyards and Gardens is a collaborative performance installation. This new work examines memory as a process of reconstruction rather than an exact recall of fixed events, embracing the various elaborations, distortions, and omissions. 

“A dance. A concert. A curious analogue driven performance experience. A visual and sonic album of reconstructed memories and distortions. Revealed in an immersive environment of nature and technology. The warm glow of antiquated innovations and embodied experience. It’s a living album that continues to fold and unfold into itself. Digging deep into the beauty of how the body remembers” – Nicole Mion.
